Summary
All Hamlet Kennedy ever wanted to be is an ordinary girl. She
has an amazingly smart seven-year-old sister named Desdemonda, or Dezzie. Her
parents teach Shakespeare. They are Shakespeare freaks. They are obsessed with
the Bard. Hamlet’s life changed when her younger sister joined the
8th grade with her. She told her sister to be normal, but that was
pretty hard considering the fact that she is a seven-year-old genius. Everyone
wondered how old Dezzie was, but two girls were especially curious how old she
was. Saber and Mauri pretended to be nice to Hamlet just so they could find out
the truth about Dezzie. They even pretended to like Dezzie. At school, they were
studying about Shakespeare, so Hamlet did not want her parents to find out. If
they did, they would want to be involved. Since Dezzie knew so much about the
Bard, Saber and Mauri kept on pretending to be Dezzie’s friend, so they could
for sure pass their classes. If they didn’t, they would not be able to go to
their family ski trip. Dezzie was being used. Hamlet tried to tell her, but
Dezzie wouldn’t believe it. One day, Hamlet had to read a part of Midsummer
Night’s Dream. When she read, the whole class was shocked. Everyone looked
at her in awe. She had read the story beautifully and perfect. The teacher asked
her if she ever acted out Shakespeare, and she told her to play as Puck in the
play. Hamlet definitely did not want her parents to find out about this.
Meanwhile, Hamlet had a huge crush on a guy named Carter. She has liked him ever
since she started HoHo. And ever since the beginning of school, she has been
getting notes in her locker. She hopes it’s Carter, but it might be her best
friend Ty. Her good friend Judith told Hamlet that Ty likes her, and Hamlet is
freaked out. She only thinks of Ty as a brother, not a boyfriend. And, a guy
named KC always annoys Hamlet, but people say that he likes Hamlet. But, she
hates him. She thinks he is a nuisance. On the other hand, Saber and Mauri are
getting Hamlet very mad. They keep on pretending to be Dezzie’s friend, and they
act extremely mean to Hamlet. They purposely try to get Hamlet in trouble. For
example, in art, the girls and Hamlet were arguing. Mauri called Hamlet a jerk,
and the teacher thought someone said that to her. So, she sent them all to the
principal’s office. There the principal asked them what happened separately. Of
course, Hamlet told the truth, that it was just a misunderstanding. But, the
other girls told Dezzie to say that Hamlet said it to Mauri. Luckily, Dezzie
told the truth. Later on, Saber and Mauri told Mrs. Kennedy that they are
learning about Shakespeare. So, Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy called their teacher and
asked to go and be a guest visitor at their school. When they came, it was so
embarrassing for Hamlet. Her parents came wearing Elizabethan era clothes, and
they marched around the class banging a tambourine with Carter. Plus, Hamlet’s
parents found out that she plays the role of Puck. After that class, she ran to
the councilors office crying. She told the councilor everything. Then, Hamlet
felt a little bit better. When she came home, her parents were furious. They
were mad because someone broke Mr. Kennedy’s Globe Theater, and Hamlet was the
last one to use it. Of course, they assumed it was her. But, Dezzie, Saber, and
Mauri were actually the last ones to use it. Hamlet was so mad because they
assumed it was her when it wasn’t. She told her parents that it was Dezzie.
They asked her, and it was true. Her parents apologized to her and things
started to get a little better between her parents. Her parents finally started
to listen to her. Then, Hamlet and Dezzie started talking, and Dezzie knew that
Saber and Mauri were using her. She just didn’t want to admit it. Then, they
made a plan to get back at them. They were going to give the girls wrong facts,
so they would get a bad grade. Then came the day of the play. In math, KC was
flirting with Hamlet, and she kinda liked it. He was being very sweet to her.
He basically told her that he was the secret admirer that was leaving notes in
her locker, and he kissed her on the cheek. Then, Hamlet finally confronted Ty,
and she told him that she wants to be just friends. He laughed, and he was
kinda confused. Hamlet was confused, too. It turned out that there was
confusion in who likes who. KC was actually the one who liked Hamlet, not Ty.
Then, Hamlet started liking KC, and she didn’t like Carter anymore. Then it was
time for the play. Hamlet was so nervous and scared. Before the play started,
Mauri and Saber introduced the life of the Bard. They started giving facts, and
out of four facts, only one of them was true. They were the fake facts Dezzie
told the girls. Once the play started, Hamlet did amazing. She did not mess up
any lines. When she saw her family and friends with proud and happy expressions,
she realized that she didn’t have such a bad life after all. And, she finally
accepted who she is.
